This product contains osmium in oxidation state VI, which is highly reactive.

Application
Potassium osmate is used as a homogeneous catalyst for the cis-dihydroxylation of olefins. The reaction converts the olefin to a cis-diol via a cyclic osmate ester intermediate. Osmium tetroxide can be used to catalyse this reaction, but potassium osmate is often preferred due to the hazards associated with the volatility and toxicity of osmium tetroxide.
