Innovative products for cutting-edge research

Today our catalysts are not only an integral part of the manufacturing process for many products but they also find their application in cutting-edge research and development.

A team of researchers from Poland are sharing the results of their pioneering work where Rh-50 (Rh(2,4-pentanedionate)(CO)2), available from Johnson Matthey, was successfully used with pyrrolylphosphine ligands for hydroformylation. 

The preferred commercial product from this reaction is the linear structure, n-butanal, rather than the branched structure, 2-methylpropanal. Researchers investigated the effects of solvent in the reaction. The key outcomes are that water increased the linear to branched ratio and pure aldehyde as solvent increased yield but lowered the linear to branched ratio.
